FORGE Project Research to be Presented at FEMS EUROMAT 2023

Mon, 04 September, 2023

Two pieces of work undertaken as part of the FORGE project are to be presented at FEMS EUROMAT 2023 in Frankfurt, Germany.

The first, a presentation titled, ‘Optimisation of process parameters for high entropy alloy coatings: cold spray, high velocity oxygen fuel, high velocity air fuel, and laser cladding,’ was co-written by Dibakor Boruah, Emily Davison and Shiladitya Paul of TWI alongside Alvise Bianchin of MBN Nanomaterialia Spa and Ali Bakir, Ahamed Ameen, and Deepak Sharma of the Materials Innovation Centre and the University of Leicester.

Dibakor Boruah will be presenting this work on behalf of the project consortium, providing information about research into the optimisation of process parameters to deposit CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) onto carbon steel substrates using cold spray, high velocity oxygen fuel, high velocity air fuel, and laser cladding.

The research was backed up by a comprehensive literature review around the production of CCA coatings using each of the processes investigated to create a framework for the optimising of process parameters for each technique.

The optimal process parameters were designed based upon key performance indicators including deposition efficiency, coating thickness per pass, surface roughness, microstructure, interfacial adhesion strength, and microhardness.

All four of the optimised processes showed sufficiently dense, defect-free coatings, while statistical analysis of the design and experiment data improved the understanding of each process on the coating properties.

The second presentation, ‘Effectiveness of Compositionally Complex Alloys as Hydrogen Barriers,’ is based upon work by Alfonso Navarro-Lopez, Nico de Wispelaere, L Duprez of OCAS NV and Alvise Bianchin of MBN Nanomaterialia Spa.

Providing an overview of the FORGE project’s aim to design and develop high performance coatings based upon compositionally complex alloys (CCAs) for use in the steel, aluminium, cement and ceramic industries, this presentation details research to determine how effective these CCAs are as hydrogen barriers.

This investigation selected CCAs based on a combination of machine learning and experimental high throughput techniques before the sensitivity to hydrogen pick-up was monitored via deuterium charging followed by thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). The TDS measurements showed the amounts of deuterium released over time from CCAs that had been cast, hot-rolled or annealed.

The research demonstrated that there were four potential candidates that could prove effective as hydrogen barriers based on the designed CCAs, with more work underway to determine whether sensitivity to hydrogen pick-up is related to the CCA microstructure or is a purely chemical effect depending on the concentration of elements they contain.

FEMS EUROMAT 2023 is taking place from the 3-7 September in Frankfurt, Germany, bringing together experts, innovators and researchers to network and share cutting edge research on materials science and technology.
